The Texas wine industry is experiencing a remarkable surge, with 2026 expected to be a record year for sales and production as consumer interest in local wines grows.
According to the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association, the state’s wine production has increased by 40% over the past five years, with total vineyard acreage now surpassing 5,000 acres. This growth places Texas as the fifth-largest wine producer in the United States, trailing only California, Oregon, Washington, and New York.
“It’s an exciting time to be in the Texas wine industry,” said Kim McPherson, owner of McPherson Cellars in Lubbock. “The quality of our wines is being recognized more than ever, and consumers are eager to support local vineyards.”
Sales of Texas wine reached $1.2 billion in 2025, a substantial increase from the previous year, driven in part by the growing popularity of wine tourism. The Texas Hill Country, known for its scenic landscapes and diverse wine offerings, has become a destination for wine enthusiasts, drawing over 1.5 million visitors annually.
To capitalize on this trend, wineries are investing in innovative marketing strategies and expanding their offerings. Many are collaborating with local chefs to create unique tasting experiences that highlight the regional terroir. For instance, the recent “Texas Taste Trail” initiative promotes the pairing of local wines with state-grown ingredients, further enticing visitors.
The Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association also reports that the average price per bottle of Texas wine has increased, with premium wines now commanding prices that rival California counterparts. This shift is indicative of the increasing quality and reputation of Texas wines in the national market.
Challenges remain, as climate variability poses risks to grape production. However, many Texas vintners are employing sustainable farming practices and investing in climate-resilient grape varieties. As the industry continues to mature, experts believe that Texas has the potential to further solidify its position in the national and international wine markets.
