As of August 2026, Texas has solidified its status as the leader in solar energy, boasting over 40 GW of installed solar capacity, a significant increase from 29 GW just two years prior.
Austin-based SunPower Corp. has announced plans to invest $1.5 billion in expanding solar farms in West Texas, a move expected to create 2,500 jobs in the region. The new installations aim to further bolster the state's renewable energy output as demand for cleaner energy sources grows amid increasing concerns over climate change.
"Texas is at the forefront of the renewable energy revolution in the U.S., and our investments reflect our commitment to a sustainable future," said Peter Johnson, CEO of SunPower Corp. "This expansion will not only provide clean energy but also drive economic growth in our communities."
The state's solar capacity has more than doubled in the past five years, driven by both private and public sector investments. The Texas Renewable Energy Association reports that solar energy now accounts for approximately 15% of the state's total energy generation.
In addition to SunPower's initiatives, other companies like NextEra Energy and First Solar are also ramping up their solar projects across the state. This collective surge in solar energy resources is expected to help Texas meet its ambitious goal of achieving 50% renewable energy by the year 2030.
Despite facing challenges such as regulatory hurdles and competition from natural gas, the solar sector in Texas is showing resilience. Local governments, particularly in areas like El Paso and San Antonio, are increasingly supportive of solar initiatives, offering incentives for businesses and homeowners to adopt solar technology.
Moreover, the recent federal tax incentives for renewable energy are expected to further accelerate growth. The Inflation Reduction Act, passed in 2022, provides substantial tax credits for solar developers, making investments more attractive.
As Texas continues to lead the solar charge, experts predict that by 2035, the state could see its solar capacity reach 100 GW, potentially powering millions of homes with clean, renewable energy.
