In the wake of sustained interest rate hikes, regional banks across Texas have reported significant gains in both deposits and loan origination.
As of August 2026, the Federal Reserve’s decision to incrementally increase interest rates has begun to reshape the financial landscape, benefiting local institutions. According to the Texas Bankers Association, regional banks have seen a 15% rise in total deposits in the first half of the year, compared to the previous year.
Notably, Dallas-based Comerica Bank has emerged as a frontrunner in capitalizing on these changes, reporting a 20% increase in new loan applications. As CEO, Curt Farmer stated, “Our focus on personalized customer service and tailored loan products has resonated well in this environment of rising rates.”
The uptick in deposits is largely attributed to higher yields on savings accounts and certificates of deposit, which have become increasingly attractive as competition heats up among banks. Houston’s PlainsCapital Bank has also joined the fray, launching a new marketing campaign aimed at young professionals seeking to maximize their savings.
“We are strategically enhancing our product offerings to meet the demands of a more rate-sensitive clientele,” said PlainsCapital’s Regional Manager, Rita Morales. “Our new CD rates are among the most competitive in Texas, and we’re seeing a positive response.”
In conjunction with deposit growth, demand for consumer loans, particularly mortgages and auto loans, has surged. Many banks are reporting an increase in applications, stemming from pent-up demand as potential borrowers take advantage of the current rate environment before further hikes are implemented.
Despite concerns about the broader economic ramifications of rising rates, Texas banks remain optimistic. The Dallas Fed’s latest report indicates that economic growth in the state is holding steady, with a predicted growth rate of 3.2% for 2026.
As competition among banks intensifies, industry analysts expect innovative products and services to emerge. Local community banks are also adapting their strategies, some even partnering with fintech companies to develop mobile banking solutions tailored to younger customers.
Overall, while the landscape is changing, Texas regional banks are proving resilient, positioning themselves for sustained growth in the coming months.
