In Lubbock, a hub for cotton farming, local farmer Jim McAllister, who has been in the business for over 20 years, shares his concerns. “This year, we saw some of the hottest temperatures on record. I had to irrigate more than ever, and that’s just not sustainable,” McAllister stated. He added that many farmers are exploring alternative crops as a hedge against these unpredictable weather patterns.

The Texas Department of Agriculture has initiated programs aimed at enhancing water conservation and developing drought-resistant crop varieties. Last month, the state allocated $5 million for research into sustainable farming practices, which experts believe is crucial for the survival of the cotton industry.
Furthermore, the ongoing expansion of the Cotton Incorporated research program, which partners with universities and agricultural organizations, aims to improve the resilience of cotton crops. According to Dr. Laura Lee, a leading agricultural scientist at Texas Tech University, “Investing in R&D is critical. We need to adapt our practices to not only survive climate change but to thrive in it.”
