As the Texas cotton industry grapples with the dual challenges of climate change and economic volatility, farmers across the state are bracing for what could be a historically low yield this season.

In regions like the High Plains, which produce over 40 percent of the nation’s cotton, growers have reported a significant decline in crop viability due to extreme heat waves and inconsistent rainfall patterns. According to the National Weather Service, the average temperature in the area has increased by 2.3 degrees Fahrenheit over the last decade, putting immense stress on an already vulnerable crop.

“We’re seeing temperatures that we’ve never experienced before, and it’s wreaking havoc on our fields,” said Jim McAlister, a third-generation cotton farmer from Lubbock. “If we don’t receive substantial rain soon, we could face losses upwards of 30 percent this year.”

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service estimates that cotton production in Texas could fall to less than 3.5 million bales in 2026, a drastic decline from the 5.5 million bales produced in 2021. This drop not only affects farmers but extends to the entire supply chain, from ginning operations to retail.

In response to these challenges, many farmers are turning to innovative agricultural practices. Precision agriculture technologies, such as moisture sensors and drone monitoring, are being integrated into farming protocols to optimize water usage and improve crop resilience. “It’s not just about surviving; it’s about adapting and thriving in a changing environment,” McAlister added.

Furthermore, the Texas Cotton Ginners Association reports that investment in sustainable farming practices has spiked, with many producers seeking funding through the USDA’s Climate-Smart Commodities Program. This initiative aims to incentivize environmentally friendly practices while helping farmers mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.

As the situation unfolds, industry experts are urging lawmakers to prioritize climate resilience in agricultural policy. “We need comprehensive support from both state and federal levels to help farmers transition to more sustainable practices,” said Dr. Sarah Lopez, an agricultural economist at Texas A&M University. “Failing to act could mean devastating consequences for Texas agriculture.”
