In a rapidly evolving financial landscape, Texas community banks are stepping up their game to fend off challenges posed by fintech disruptors.
While larger banking institutions have the resources to invest heavily in technology, smaller community banks in cities like El Paso and Fort Worth are finding innovative ways to leverage technology for customer service and operational efficiency.
For instance, Guaranty Bank & Trust, headquartered in Mount Pleasant, launched a new mobile banking app in early July 2026, allowing customers to access banking services seamlessly. “We understand that our clients want convenience without sacrificing personal service,” said Jim Wright, CEO of Guaranty Bank. “Our new app provides features tailored specifically for our community, including local merchant offers and personalized financial advice.”
The app’s launch comes amid growing competition from fintech companies like Chime and Cash App, which have attracted younger customers with user-friendly interfaces and no-fee services. Community banks are recognizing that to maintain their customer base, they must adapt quickly.
According to a recent survey by the Texas Bankers Association, about 67% of Texas community banks are investing in digital transformation initiatives. These investments include upgrading existing systems, enhancing cybersecurity measures, and improving customer engagement tools.
In Fort Worth, Texas Bank has partnered with a local tech startup to develop an AI-driven customer service chatbot, which will be implemented in late July. “The chatbot will assist customers with routine inquiries, allowing our staff to focus on more complex issues,” said CEO Alison Granger. “We want to ensure that every customer interaction is as efficient as possible.”
The push for innovation comes as community banks face declining branch visits—a trend exacerbated by the pandemic. A study from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas found that in 2025, branch foot traffic dropped by nearly 35% compared to pre-pandemic levels.
As traditional banking models evolve, many community banks are also exploring partnerships with fintech firms. For example, San Antonio-based Broadway Bank has collaborated with a fintech provider to offer instant loan approvals through its mobile platform, streamlining the lending process for small business owners.
These strategic partnerships may be essential for community banks to thrive in the digital age, as they can provide access to advanced technologies without the need for extensive in-house development.
Ultimately, as Texas community banks continue to innovate, their ability to remain relevant in a competitive environment will depend on their commitment to understanding and meeting the evolving needs of their customers.
