The Texas cattle industry, valued at over $10 billion, has faced growing scrutiny over its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and land degradation. In response, ranchers across the state are implementing techniques aimed at reducing their ecological footprint.

Rancher Tom Hastings of Amarillo has been at the forefront of this movement, integrating rotational grazing methods that allow pastures to rest and recover.

The state has also introduced incentive programs to encourage these practices, offering grants and technical assistance to ranchers willing to transition to sustainable methods. This includes funding for water conservation systems, erosion control, and pasture restoration projects.
While the shift towards sustainability is promising, challenges remain. Many ranchers must navigate the financial costs associated with changing their operations, and the education required to adopt new practices can be daunting.
