Texas is witnessing a significant shift in its energy production as renewable energy sources have now overtaken fossil fuels for the first time in history.
According to a recent report from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), renewable sources, particularly wind and solar, accounted for over 55% of the state’s energy generation during the first half of 2026. This marks a substantial increase from just 35% in 2020, demonstrating the rapid development of the renewable energy sector in the Lone Star State.
This surge in renewable energy is largely attributed to favorable state policies, including tax incentives for solar and wind projects, and the increasing competitiveness of renewable technologies in the marketplace. “The transformation we are witnessing in Texas is not just about meeting energy demands; it is about leading the way to a sustainable future,” stated Bill Magness, CEO of ERCOT.
The state is home to the largest wind farm in North America, the Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center, located near Abilene, which has a generating capacity of 735 MW. Additionally, solar installations have expanded rapidly, with statewide capacity exceeding 20,000 MW, largely due to utility-scale projects in West Texas.
As Texas approaches its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the transition to renewable energy is seen as a crucial step. The Texas Renewable Energy Industry Association predicts that the state could create up to 500,000 jobs in the renewable sector by 2030, further solidifying its position as a leader in clean energy.
Local governments are also playing a role in the renewable energy trend. Cities like Austin and Dallas have initiated programs incentivizing residents and businesses to adopt solar energy solutions, contributing to the growing share of renewables in the state’s energy mix.
