Houston's housing market is showing remarkable resilience despite ongoing economic volatility, with home sales rising by 8% year-over-year as of June 2026, according to the Houston Association of Realtors.

The median home price in Houston now stands at $335,000, up from $310,000 last year, reflecting a consistent demand for housing in the area. This growth comes as the region faces challenges, including fluctuating oil prices and rising inflation rates that have prompted cautious consumer spending.

"Houston’s diversity in employment sectors is key to our housing market’s strength," noted Gina Roberts, President of the Houston Association of Realtors. "While energy remains a vital part of our economy, we are seeing significant growth in technology, healthcare, and logistics, which helps stabilize the housing market."

Despite concerns over economic instability, the number of homes sold in June reached 9,500, up from 8,800 in the same month last year. Experts attribute this increase to the city’s relatively affordable housing options compared to other major metropolitan areas, as well as historically low mortgage rates.

However, the rising median price poses challenges for first-time buyers. A recent study from Harvard University indicates that nearly 30% of Houston renters could face housing affordability issues if prices continue to rise. In response, city officials are exploring initiatives to increase the availability of affordable housing units.

"We need to ensure that all Houstonians have access to safe and affordable housing," stated Mayor Sylvester Turner. "Our administration is committed to working with developers to create more options for families at all income levels."

In the luxury market, homes priced over $1 million are seeing increased interest, with sales in this segment rising by 15% compared to last year. This shift indicates that affluent buyers are still confident in Houston’s long-term prospects, despite economic headwinds.

As Houston navigates through these uncertain times, the housing market stands out as a beacon of stability, attracting both local and out-of-state buyers looking for opportunities in a city that is known for its resilience.
